Global Land Governance Index (LANDex), an evolution of ILC’s Dashboard, uses common indicators and methodologies to promote ‘People-Centred Land Governance’ monitoring. It puts people at the centre of land data, democratizing land monitoring and building a data ecosystem where no one will be left behind.
After its successful piloting in 2019, the initiative is set to produce the data results in this next phase. The objective of this initiative is to contribute to hold the Nepal government and other stakeholders accountable for strengthening land governance through data generation, dissemination and use by implementing the NLC Nepal’s strategic priority #3 on contributing to Knowledge Production and People’s Data. Specifically, LANDex data potentially contributes to better understanding on how the recently formulated or amended land law, Land use act, and National Land Policy are contributing to progress towards people-centered land governance. Additionally, this helps to link government’s work with land related SDG goals with focus on the most marginalized communities’ access to land resources.
The major objectives under the initiative are:
- Collect data based on LANDex indicators guided by the Nepal LANDex Data Package and develop recommendations to improve women’s access to land and other resources
- Assess the progress of Nepal towards land indicators of SDGs 1.4.2, 5a.1, 5a.2 and 15.3.1.
- Identify problems/barriers to enhancing land tenure security of landless including the Dalits and provide recommendations for government’s land allocation process.
